Dover Gym Club – in the community

Students from The Folkestone Academy had some special visitors for one of their sport sessions recently.

Dover Gym Club was invited to attend the Academy who have just started a new gymnastics extension for Year 7 pupils.

The extension programme is an extra-curricular scheme designed to enable students to experience a variety of activities, to help them develop their talent and passion.

The pupils started by showing the DGC guests their own gymnastic skills working in teams. Dover Gym Club Coach, Jack Hedges then taught the students some moves that they can use to put together a floor routine.

Club Director and Vice Chairman Jon Green spoke to the students about a brand new schools floor and vault competition for years 7, 8 and 9, which is being held on 21 March to mark Dover Gym Club’s 40th anniversary and to celebrate the 2016 Olympic Games.

Mr Green said: ‘We were very impressed by the level of skills the students already have for gymnastics and many of them show excellent potential. They worked well as a team and responded very well to Jack putting them through their paces. The enjoyment they get from this activity was clear from their smiles and happy expressions! It was a pleasure to visit the Academy and I hope to see some of the students at our schools competition in March.’

PE Teacher Mrs Wood said: ‘The Academy students thoroughly enjoyed their gymnastics workshop and they will be practising for the forthcoming competition organised by Dover Gymnastics Club. I would like to thank Jon and Jack for their time and enthusiasm.’
